The
elderly lady appears to be coming from Galway's train and bus station.
Adjacent on the right is the Corrib Great Southern Hotel.
During
the summer months Eyre Square is a place to hang out, get a sun
tan, listen to musicians or read a book.
Doing a 180° turn you'll see the fountain, which was erected
in 1984 to mark Galway's quincentenary. The corroded iron sheets
symbolize the sails of the classic Galway Hooker, which is a traditional
fishing boat.
No
description of Eyre Square would be complete without a mention of
the statue of Padraic O'Conaire. This prolific Irish native language
writer of short stories is being honored by this memorial, situated
not far from the docks where he used to love to sit and write. |
