On Salmon Weir Bridge we have a good view of the weir proper. It's
specially constructed to allow passage for the Atlantic Salmon to
Lake Corrib, which lies straight ahead.
It's
an excellent place to do a spot of fly-fishing, licenses for which
can be obtained from Galway Salmon Weir Fishery. Brown Trout fishing
does not require a licence.
Turning
right we see the Mercy Convent. The nun's do play an important role
in education and community care.
The
spire of St. Nicholas Church is visible further to the right.
Unmissable
on Galway's skyline is the Cathedral, with its prominent dome measuring
145ft to the top of the cross.
The
wide expanse of green seen on the right of the Cathedral belongs
to Galway University and is part of a nice walk along the River
Corrib. The walk leads past the Universities student residences.
Next
we take a look inside Galway Cathedral...
